Seth Wolfe Claims Bronze at Junior Worlds

Male featherweight Seth Wolfe (Miami, Fla.) captured a bronze medal on Saturday during the opening day of the World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Tijuana, Mexico. The four-day championships run through Tuesday.

Wolfe won four straight matches to reach the medal round. He opened with a 12-1 win over New Zealand's Randy Javier, then ran off victories over Canada's Lawrence Phamhung, 10-5, the Philippines' Keno Mendoza, 5-4, and Colombia's Oscar Munoz, 9-4. In the semifinals, Wolfe dropped a 5-3 decision to Cuba's Jose del Cobas, who went on to win the silver medal.

Two other U.S. fighters reached the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Male heavyweight Troy Lunn (Carlsbad, Calif.) opened with a 2-1 victory over Brazil's Fabio Magalhes before losing 1-0 to eventual gold medalist Aydin Bahmalov of Azerbaijan.

Female heavyweight Adrienne Ivey (Ashburn, Va.) reached the quarterfinals with a 9-4 win over Chinese Taipei's Yeh Sung Chiang, but then lost by an 11-8 count to Turkey's Nafia Kus, who later claimed the silver medal.

Female featherweight Deireanne Morales (Lynwood, Calif.) won her opening match over Great Britain's Melissa Lamb, 11-3, but then fell to Guatemala's Elizabeth Zamora in her second-round match, 3-1.

Female light heavyweight Dess Vincecruz (Alexandria, Va.) female lost her opening-round match by a score of 5-4 to to eventual bronze medalist Kristina Pella of Sweden.
