Thirteen-year-old Cheyenne Lewis (Elk Grove, Calif.) won the World Junior Taekwondo Championships on Sunday in Tijuana, Mexico. Her victory in the female flyweight division gives the U.S. two straight junior world championships in that weight class. Selina Tubbs (Plano, Texas) captured the female flyweight title in 2008.
Lewis started the day with a 17-1 defeat of Azerbaijan's Narmina Mammadova, followed by a 14-0 shutout of Mexico's Linda Marina Torres and a 16-5 semifinal win over Iran's Maryam Sharjahani. In the gold-medal final against Korea's Choi Mi Hui, Lewis found herself trailing 11-8 entering the final round but rallied for a 13-12 win to clinch the title.
In male flyweight action, James Samotshozo (Fairfax, Va.) reached the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Italy's Rega Vittorio, but then dropped a 10-3 decision to eventual gold medalist Jeon Hun Kim of Korea.
Female middleweight Haley Cisper (Oklahoma City, Okla.) won her opening match by a score of 8-1 over New Zealand's Sarah Vergeer to reach the round of 16. But then she suffered a 7-3 defeat to Chinese Taipei's Lin Jo Wei.
Male bantamweight Alexander Yow (Mequon, Wis.) started the day with a 1-0 win over Singapore's Keith Ong, but then lost to Mexico's Cesar Roman Rodriguez in the round of 32, 16-6. Rodriguez would go on to win the gold medal.
The fifth U.S. fighter in action on Sunday, Richard Yang (Perry Hall, Md.) in the male middleweight division, lost his opening-round match to Chinese Taipei's Li Cheng Wei, 9-2.
