The remarkable growth and increasing skill level in U.S. sport poomsae was clearly evident at the 2010 National Poomsae Team Trials and 2010 USAT National Championships which were held in Orlando, Fla., July 2-3.  Over 540 sport poomsae athletes, including 241 Poomsae Team Trials competitors, took center ring to demonstrate technical precision and aesthetic presentation in highly competitive divisions. Gold medalists earned a spot on the 2010 U.S. National Taekwondo Poomsae A Team, which will represent the U.S. at the 5th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 8-10.  Silver medalists earned a spot on the 2010 US National Taekwondo Poomsae B Team, which will represent the U.S. at the 1st Senior Pan American Poomsae Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, in December.

The two day U.S. team selection process was directed by USAT Poomsae Coordinators Master Victoria Serbin and Master Raymond Hsu, and supported by USAT National Poomsae Certified Referees Paul Cummings, Alice DiPace, Karin Hoff, Lou Keppner, Susan Lewis, Vincent Lo, Leslie Marlow, Ronald Marlow, Amely Moras, Lois Schoenbrun, Jaime Schulte and Mike Wickham.

The national competition is an essential step in achieving the USAT National Sport Poomsae Program’s goal, which according to its director Master Jimmy Kim, is to establish and propagate a common standard amongst all USAT members and athletes at the grass root level that helps U.S. poomsae athletes develop and effectively compete at the international level. The program is a collaborative and coordinated effort that taps into the nationwide resources and contributions of masters, coaches, current and former national team members, and U.S. international referees to develop and support world class sport poomsae athletes for Team USA.
