U.S. Women Qualify for World Cup Quarterfinals

With a 4-0 sweep of Vietnam on Sunday, the U.S. women's team qualified for Tuesday's quarterfinal round at the WTF World Cup Team Taekwondo Championships in Urumqi, China. The U.S. men's team split with China on Sunday, 2-2, and are still in the hunt for the quarterfinal round depending on the outcome of Monday's match versus Thailand.
Against Vietnam, the American women's team enjoyed a 4-0 win by fin/flyweight Charlotte Craig (Murietta, Calif.), a 6-3 win by bantam/featherweight Danielle Pelham (Bothell, Wash.), a 13-1 victory by light/welterweight Paige McPherson (Miami, Fla.) and a 3-1 win by middle/heavyweight Lauren Cahoon (Miami, Fla.). The women's team faces Russia on Monday in the final preliminary match.
In Sunday's men's competition, the U.S. got wins from fin/flyweight James Howe (San Ramon, Calif.), 3-0 in overtime, and from bantam/featherweight Terrence Jennings (Alexandria, Va.), 6-4, over their counterparts from China. Light/welterweight Antony Graf (Miami, Fla.) lost 7-3, and middle/heavyweight Jason Neville (Edmond, Okla.) dropped a 4-3 decision.
The top eight teams from the 20-team round-robin portion that ends on Monday will advance to the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The semifinal and final rounds will also take place on Tuesday.
