2005 Male Co-Athletes of the Year - Mark and Steven Lopez
Mark (l) and Steven Lopez
The Lopez family made sports history in 2005 by having three siblings win world championship titles at the same event. Their victories punctuated the most successful world championships in U.S. history.
Mark Lopez won six consecutive matches, including three shutouts, to claim the men's featherweight gold medal at the World Championships in Madrid. He defeated fighters from Germany, Ecuador, the Philippines, Egypt, the Netherlands and Korea to take the title.
Steven Lopez won his third straight world title with victories over Korea, Croatia, Brazil, the Ivory Coast, Spain and Iran. He fought the entire tournament with a lingering hamstring injury and the gold-medal match with a severely sprained ankle.
Their history-making accomplishments have earned Mark and Steven Lopez the 2005 Male Co-Athlete of Year Award.
